Disney are looking to turn ‘The Rocketeer’ into a franchise by making a follow up to their 1991 film for their streaming service.
The original Joe Johnston film, based of the Dave Stevens comics, was a homage to the classic film serials and told the story of a young stunt pilot who stumbles upon a jetpack and becomes a hero in the 1930s. The film starred Billy Campbell and Jennifer Connelly.
‘The Return Of The Rocketeer’ will be produced by and possibly star David Oyelowo (‘Selma’) with a script by Ed Ricourt (‘Now You See Me’). The story will focus on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the mantle of the Rocketeer. Whether it is a direct sequel or a reimagining is unclear but the film will be set in a post World War 2 era moving the story on roughly ten years from the original.
No director has been announced or production scheduled revealed.
