2023 has been a tough year for the comic book film. After over a decade of ruling the box office, this year saw a number of films fail for various different reasons. The term ‘superhero fatigue’ has been thrown around, and that might be partially responsible with the amount of product put out being more than ever before, but the cinematic landscape has changed since the pandemic and no film, no matter the genre, is a sure fire hit anymore. This year was also the first where we saw a cinematic universe come to an end with Warners shuttering the DCEU. Putting all the doomsaying aside, there was plenty of quality films released to ensure that the comic book film is still alive and well, it’s just the the audience are now more selective about what they see.
