Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre has won the role of John Stewart, a member of the Green Lanterns, in the DC Studios show Lanterns.
Lanterns has been pitched as a gritty, True Detective-esque show that follows Hal Jordan, a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns, as he reluctantly mentors Stewart, a younger Green Lantern. The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Kyle Chandler has already been cast as Hal Jordan.
John Stewart, created in 1971 by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, is one of DC’s most prominent black superheroes.
Lanterns has a straight-to-series order at HBO. Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are executive producing and writing, with Mundy showrunning what is planned as an eight-episode season.
