After months of speculation, Universal has revealed that Christopher Nolan’s next film will be an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

The Odyssey, a continuation of the story of The Iliad, dates back to the 8th Century BC and follows the story of Odysseus, a Greek warrior, as he makes his way home from the Trojan war. It’s a fantastical adventure, filled with gods and monsters, which goes against Nolan’s usual grounded approach.

It has already been announced that the cast will include Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron.

Damon would be a fit for Odysseus and Holland would be in the age range to play his son, Telemachus, and Theron his wife, Penelope, but no roles have been announced.

The Odyssey has been adapted many times over the years. Most recently, The Return, starring Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus, which adapts the end of The Odyssey, debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
