Captain America made the jumped to the screen in 1944, just four years after his creation, in a Republic serial and this was followed by an animated series in the ’60s but it wasn’t until the end of the ’70s that he first got the film treatment. has been depicted in various films, with notable entries spanning both animated and live-action formats. In 1979 a pair of TV movies, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Captain America 2: Death Too Soon, were released to little fanfare and zero critical acclaim. These were followed up with Captain America (1990) , direct by schlockmeister Albert Pyun, which was designed to cash in on the success of Batman (1989). Pyun claimed the film was butchered by the producers and was another failure.

Cap entered the modern era of superhero cinema when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Portrayed by Chris Evans, he became a pivotal character in the film series, first appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), which presented Cap’s origin story during World War II. This film is followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), which portrayed a darker, more complex narrative as Steve Rogers navigates modern threats. Captain America: Civil War (2016) introduced a conflict between heroes, highlighting the tensions surrounding responsibility and accountability. The character’s journey culminates in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where Captain America plays a vital role in the battle against Thanos, sealing his legacy as a leading figure in the MCU but the film also saw the baton passed to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

Now we enter a brand new era for Captain America with the release of Captain America: Brave New World and Wilson embracing the mantel.
