Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will write an direct a new adaptation of Starship Troopers for Columbia Pictures. The film will go back to the original book, rather than Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film, for it’s source material.
Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers tells of a war between Earth and two alien species, as seen through the eyes of a young soldier. First published in 1959, the book became an early sci-fi bestseller and won a Hugo award. Although the book was popular, allegations that is was a fascist piece of work grew over the years and it was this that the Verhoeven film satirised. Blomkamp’s take is said to be a straight adaptation of the novel.
Blomkamp is no stranger to science fiction, have made his breakthrough with District 9, and also directing Chappie and Elysium. He was also attached to direct a sequel to Aliens for a number of years but the project never materialised.
