The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.

Levy has been working on the project since 2022 alongside screenwriter Jonathan Tropper.

This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.

Shawn Levy

Levy added more information in an interview after the announcement.

The movie is a new adventure. It’s new characters, it takes place in a new period of time, after the Battle of Exegol, after Episode IX, and so there’s so many opportunities to tell a Star Wars story that has all the heart and action and fun of Star Wars, but to do it in ways that are new and original…the peek of the starship is just one example of a world we haven’t seen onscreen.

We’re not in development. We’re in pre-production. We’re shooting. We’re going to start shooting this fall to come out May 27, 2027.
