The Final Destination film series began with its first installment released in 2000, directed by James Wong and based on a concept by Wong and Glen Morgan. The plot centers around a group of teenagers who escape death after one of them has a premonition of a catastrophic plane explosion. When the survivors find that death has a design to claim them one by one, the film cleverly intertwines elements of horror with a philosophical exploration of fate and inevitability. The film was a commercial success, which prompted studios to consider the potential for sequels that could further explore the sinister theme of predetermined death.
Following the success of the original, the franchise expanded with a series of sequels: Final Destination 2 (2003), Final Destination 3 (2006), The Final Destination (2009), and Final Destination 5 (2011). Each sequel introduced new characters and elaborate, imaginative death sequences that became synonymous with the series. The films are celebrated for creatively manipulating tension and suspense, along with their iconic Rube Goldberg-style (google it) death scenarios. It looked like the series concluded with its popular fifth installment but it remained in the public consciousness as a cultural touchstone for discussions on mortality and the unpredictability of life.
Now, fourteen years after the last installment, a new film is about be released and the cycle of death will begin all over again. Final Destination: Bloodlines is released on 14th May outside the US, with the US release on the 16th May.
