Blumhouse and Universal’s next attempt to revive The Exorcist franchise will star Scarlett Johansson.
It has already been announced that the film will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan and will neither be a reboot or a continuation of the existing films but will be set in the same universe.
William Friedkin’s original film, based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, is one of the most successful films of all time but the various sequels over the years have suffered creatively, critically, and commercially. In 2021, Universal bought the rights for $400 million and produced 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which was meant to be the first in a David Gordon Green directed trilogy. The film bombed at the box office, making back a fraction of what Universal had paid, and the future plans where changed.
Flanagan is currently adapting Carrie into a series for Amazon and Johansson is coming to the project off the box office smash Jurassic World: Rebirth.
