After years of saying that it would never happen, Lucasfilm have confirmed that the 50th anniversary re-release of Star Wars will be the original 1977 version.
The film will get a limited run, starting on 19th February 2027, making it the first time the film has been widely available in its original pre-A New Hope cut since the ’70s.
George Lucas famously tinkered with the film from the day it was released up until the day he sold Lucasfilm, with the biggest changes coming with the 1997 Special Edition release.
It has been rumoured all year that Lucasfilm have been remastering the original print, with screen captures flying around the internet, and earlier this year there was a clue that the shackles had been loosened when the BFI were given permission to publicly screen their original print.
