The Rambo Films Ranked

The Rambo films trace the brutal, mythic arc of John Rambo, an ex–Green Beret whose personal trauma mirrors America’s uneasy reckoning with war. It all begins with First Blood (1982), directed by Ted Kotcheff and anchored by a restrained, wounded performance from Sylvester Stallone. What starts as a tense character study escalates into full-tilt action in Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III, directed by George P. Cosmatos and Peter MacDonald respectively, where Rambo becomes a near-mythic one-man army shaped by Cold War politics and ’80s action excess.

The series later pivots toward darker realism with Rambo, which Stallone also directed, emphasizing the horrific cost of violence rather than its spectacle, and concludes (for now) with Rambo: Last Blood, directed by Adrian Grunberg, a grim, intimate send-off focused on aging, grief, and reckoning. Across decades, the franchise evolved from gritty survival thriller to bombastic action saga and back again, reflecting changing tastes and attitudes toward war heroes. And while Stallone’s chapter appears closed, there is a new Rambo film in production, from Sisu director Jalmari Helander and starring Noah Centineo as Rambo, aiming to reintroduce the character to a new generation.
