The Highlander films began with Highlander, a cult fantasy classic directed by Russell Mulcahy. The movie stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal warrior locked into centuries-long duels with others of his kind, most memorably facing off against Clancy Brown’s scene-stealing villain, the Kurgan. Sean Connery appears as Ramirez, MacLeod’s mentor, lending the film gravitas and charisma. While sequels like Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) struggled critically and narratively, the original film’s blend of sword-and-sorcery, modern settings, and mythic stakes—boosted by Queen’s iconic soundtrack—cemented its enduring fanbase.
That legacy is now set to continue with an upcoming Highlander reboot, directed by Chad Stahelski, best known for the John Wick franchise. Henry Cavill is attached to star as the new Connor MacLeod, signalling a grittier, more action-driven take on the immortals’ saga. The reboot aims to reintroduce the core concept—eternal warriors, decapitations, and “there can be only one”—to a modern audience, while respecting what made the original film a cult favourite in the first place.
