It has been reported that Marvel Studios are looking to cast a Latino lead for a ‘Werewolf By Night’ Halloween Special to be streamed on Disney+. This is the second seasonal special Marvel are producing for the streamer, the first being ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Christmas Special’.
Marvel Comics has two versions of character that could be used. The original was Jack Russell, was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, who first appeared in a 1972 issue of ‘Marvel Spotlight’. Russell went on to star in a ‘Werewolf by Night’ series that ran for 43 issues and ended in 1977.
Russell is a descendant of the mystically-altered offshoot of humans known as Lycanthropes, who eventually becomes capable of transforming on his own volition even without a full moon, and retaining his intellect while transformed. That series also saw the first appearance of Moon Knight, a character that currently has their own Disney+ series in production.
The second version of the character is Jake Gomez who first appeared in 2020. He is a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family has been cursed with lycanthropy and comes in conflict with a nefarious pharmaceutical company exploiting members of the tribe.
It is unclear which version of the character is going to be used.
They are looking to go into production early next year for a Halloween 2022 release.
