‘What We Do In The Shadows’ star Harvey Guillén is circling a secret role in ‘Blue Beetle’, Warner Bros’ upcoming superhero adaptation, which is just about to start shooting.
Xolo Maridueña will play the lead in the film which was originally developed for HBO Max but will now get a theatrical release with a 18th August 2023 release date. Angel Manuel Soto is directing from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s screenplay.
The film will be based around Jaime Reyes, the third character to take the Blue Beetle name. Jaime is a Mexican-American teenager who discovers the Blue Beetle scarab in a disused lot on the way home from school. It grafts to his spine and can form an alien exoskeleton around him that can create weapons, shields and wings.
The character is relatively new in comic book terms, having first appeared in 2006, and has a small supporting cast. If DC are trying to keep the character Guillén is playing a secret it means they see the role as important. The one character connected to Jaime that could move the needle if it was announced that they were in the film would be Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, a character Guillén could easily play but that is pure speculation.
