After the box office success of ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ it looks like the once thought dead Monsterverse has a heartbeat again.
The follow up will shoot across Australia’s Gold Coast according to Queensland State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who said the fifth film in Legendary’s kaiju franchise will go into production towards the end of this year. The previous film and ‘Kong: Skull Island’ also shot in the same location. There has been official word from Legendary but contracts must have been signed and studio space secured for the announcement to have been made.
It is unknown whether this will be a direct sequel to ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ or something else set within the franchise’s universe but there are rumours that this film could shift the focus back onto Kong. ‘G Vs. K’ ended with Kong becoming the alpha of the Hollow Earth, a prehistoric world that exists underneath our own, opening up storytelling opportunities.
‘G Vs. K’ director has previously told Deadline that he would “absolutely love to continue” but at the moment there are no creatives official attached.
The clear starting point we teed up (in GVK), exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level.

This project is unrelated to the Monsterverse spinoff series that has been set up at Apple TV+ that will explore the aftermath of the events of 2014’s ‘Godzilla’.
No release date has been set for the new film.
