Michael Mann has confirmed that a sequel to his 1995 classic Heat will be his next film. During the Deadline Contenders event in London, Mann was asked about his novel Heat 2 and he said the adaptation will be his next project.
Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.

The Heat 2 novel has a dual narrative that is both a prequel and a sequel to the original film. The plot, which follows Robert De Niro’s character Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer’s Chris Shiherlis, and Vincent Hanna, who was played by Al Pacino, starts in 1988 and leads into the events of the film, and then jumps forward and follows the surviving characters in the years after.
It has been rumoured that Adam Driver, who is the lead in Mann’s Ferrari, will take over the McCauley role from De Niro but nothing will be official announced until the actors strike is over.
We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other and we had a great time working together artistically.

Released 27 years after the film, Heat 2 was a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
Mann’s Ferrari will be released on Christmas Day.
