Blumhouse have signed a deal with Lionsgate to reimagine their classic horror catalogue and the priority is to make a new Blair Witch film.

The deal comes after the success the two companies had co-producing Imaginary which has made over $38 million since it was released just over a month ago.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with Jason many times over the years. We forged a strong relationship on The Purge when I was at Universal, and we launched STX with his film The Gift. There is no one better at this genre than the team at Blumhouse. We are thrilled to kick this partnership off with a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.

The Blair With Project (1999) is one of the successful films of all time when comparing budget to box office. With an original spend of £35000, the film went on to gross $249 million worldwide. Two sequels have already been made, one in 2001 and a second in 2016.

I don’t think there would have been a Paranormal Activity had there not first been a Blair Witch, so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.

  1. It’s certainly inevitable how The Blair Witch Project has influenced the horror genre, to name one area of our entertainment, to this day. I for one have never cared for the sequels. Because for me some classics are successful enough in the stand-alone sense. But for those who wish to take their chances on a new chapter in this timeless legacy, I wish them the best of luck.
