The Anaconda film series began with the release of the original Anaconda in 1997, directed by Luis Llosa. The film centres around a documentary film crew who embark on an expedition into the Amazon rainforest, only to encounter a monstrous anaconda that preys upon them one by one. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight, the movie blends elements of horror and adventure, showcasing not only the deadly nature of the snake but also the dynamics and conflicts within the crew. The tongue in check performances and a ridiculous narrative earned the film cult status, leading to a sequel.
The franchise continued with Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid in 2004, which introduced a different group of characters on a quest for a rare flower with potential healing properties, only to be hunted by bloodthirsty snakes. The subsequent films, Anaconda 3: Offspring in 2008 and Anacondas: Trail Of Blood in 2009, were DTV offerings that ended up on Syfy, that blended action with elements of science fiction and horror. The series gained enough of a cult following that it crossed over with another giant reptile franchise, Lake Placid, with Lake Placid vs. Anaconda debuted on Syfy in 2015.
A new film, The Anaconda, a new take on the franchise that will star Paul Rudd and Jack Black, is currently in production and will see giant snakes return to the big screen best Christmas.
