In an interview with ComicBook, Mark Hamill revealed that his time with Star Wars has come to an end and he feels that he has played Luke Skywalker for the last time.

Hamill starred as Skywalker in the original trilogy from 1977 to 1983 and reprised the character in a smaller roll in the sequel trilogy between 2015 and 2019 but has no interest in returning for future productions.

I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called ‘Star Wars’ ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,’” he said. “We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.

Hamill most recently lent his likeness and was on set to assist with Luke’s appearance in The Mandalorian and The Book Of Boba Fett but body doubles provided the physical performance and the voice was computer generated.

Hamill also Joked he left the character in state which prevented his return.

And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there’s no way I’m gonna appear as a naked Force ghost.

There is a possibility that the character could appear in next year’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, so the fanbase may need to embrace themselves for a recast.

  1. I first saw Mark as Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back (before finally seeing the first Star Wars and then Return Of The Jedi). It was a good intro. I’ve admired his work in other things and so I wish him all the best in all his post-Star-Wars endeavors.
