James Gunn and Matt Reeves have chosen Tom Rhys Harries to play the shape-shifting Batman villain Clayface for DC Studios. The film will be directed by James Watkins, whose last film was Speak No Evil.

Originally pitched to the studio by Mike Flanagan, the film is said to be based on the Feat Of Clay episodes from the 1990s’ Batman: The Animated Series. Those episodes told the origin story of DC’s second Clayface, criminal Matt Hagen, who gets shape-shifting powers after a run in with the mob and sets out on revenge. The current version of the screenplay is being written by Hossein Amini (Drive).

Tom Rhys Harries is a rising Welsh actor who is said to have beaten fellow British actors Jack O’Connell, Tom Blyth, Leo Woodall and George MacKay to the role. Rhys Harries has been working professionally for around 15 years and is known for appearing on shows like The Gentlemen and Doctor Who. Clayface will be his biggest role to date.

The film will shoot later this year and has a 11th September, 2026, release date. It will be DC Studios third film, following on from Superman and Supergirl.

  1. I remember Clayface from an animated Batman series when I was a kid. As far as shape-shifting villains go, I found him impressive and I’m glad that he’s the latest to be revitalized for another new chapter of the Batman universe.
