The Star Wars film saga began in 1977 with the release of Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), written and directed by George Lucas. What was originally considered a risky space opera with groundbreaking visual effects became a cultural phenomenon, blending mythic storytelling, heroic archetypes, and innovative special effects from Industrial Light & Magic. The film introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and the mystical Force, while establishing the epic conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Its massive success led to two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), widely regarded as the darkest and most sophisticated entry, and Return of the Jedi (1983), which concluded the original trilogy by resolving the fates of Darth Vader and the Emperor. In the mid-1980s, Lucasfilm also produced two made-for-television Ewok spin-off films — Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) — which expanded the universe on the forest moon of Endor with family-friendly adventures centred on the furry Ewoks.
After a 16-year hiatus, Lucas returned with the prequel trilogy starting with The Phantom Menace (1999), followed by Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2003). These films explored the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of the Empire, utilizing pioneering CGI techniques. In 2008, Lucasfilm released Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated feature film that served as the introduction to the acclaimed The Clone Wars animated series, expanding the prequel era with stories centered on Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano during the height of the galactic conflict. In 2012, Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney, which launched the sequel trilogy — The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) — along with standalone films like Rogue One (2016) and Solo (2018). The franchise has since expanded into a multimedia empire. Most recently, on May 22, 2026, Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu was released theatrically, bringing the popular characters from the hit Disney+ series to the big screen in a new live-action adventure directed by Jon Favreau.
