Mad Max series is a ground-breaking action/sci-fi film franchise set in a post-apocalyptic Australian outback and known for its insane vehicular combat sequences. The series debuted in 1979 with the release of Mad Max, directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson. Part of the Ozploitation boom, the film was a landmark piece of guerrilla filmmaking that smashed box office records. It was story of Max Rockatansky, a law enforcement officer seeking revenge in a world plagued by societal collapse and anarchy. The success of the first film led to several sequels, including Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, further solidifying the franchise’s impact on popular culture.

After a lengthy hiatus, the franchise was revitalized with the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, which garnered critical acclaim and redefined the action genre with its breathtaking practical effects and thrilling chase sequences. Directed once again by George Miller but featuring Tom Hardy as the new iteration of the iconic Max character, Fury Road rejuvenated the series for a new generation of fans while maintaining the gritty spirit of the original films. The new film’s success has lead to the release of the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the first Max-less film in the series. The new film maintains the post-apocalyptic setting while growing out the world. George Miller’s love for this world shows no sign of diminishing, and the director has already announced that he has plans for future instalments .

  1. Mad Max was certainly a worthy addition to the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre. So I’m glad that it could continue somehow into a new era for the cinema.
