Now that ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ is done and dusted DC Films can now move on and focus on the future. With many new films and TV shows on the slate the first out of the gate is James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’. Part sequel (some of the cast are returning), part reboot (it looks closer to the comics) to David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Gunn has been promising something different and this trailer makes it look like he has succeeded in a glorious fashion. Here are the top five things we noticed in the trailer.
5. Don’t except a lot of the characters to be around for long
It’s very clear in the trailer that there will be two teams in the film. The first line-up that can be seen striding out, in a ‘The Right Stuff’ style, in front of the American flag look like candidates for an early bath. Of that squad only Rick Flagg carries on through the rest of the trailer. Expect an early, blood, disastrous mission, that probably see the the capture of Harley Quinn, set up the rest of the film. But more importantly, is Flagg’s kangaroo shirt a tribute to the fallen Captain Boomerang?
4. This ain’t no Snyderverse film
There is a certain fanbase that only wants their DC films in a Zack Snyder style. Well, they are not going to get that here. This film is 100% Gunn. It going to be packed full of jokes, lurid colour, bright lights, blood and guts. Oh, and it’s going to be fun. Don’t hold your breath for a black and white version.
3. Who is this guy?
Once the dust settles in the film it looks like we are going to be following a core team of Rick Flagg, Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, King Shark, Ratcatcher II, Polka Dot Man, and The Thinker. But there is a another mystery character in this group. IMDB lists the actor as Julio Cesar Ruiz but no character name has been announced. It looks like he is part of the squad but is he a villain or one of Flagg’s men? Does Gunn have a surprise for us or is this just more cannon fodder?
2. It looks like King Shark is going to steal the film
It looks like King Shark is going to be everything we wanted from Killer Croc in the first film but didn’t get. We see him biting heads and ripping men in half. Gunn is really leaning into the fact that this is an actual walking, talking shark but can see the humour in it. There is also the added bonus that he is voiced by Sylvester Stallone. If Gunn could make the world fall in love with a talking tree voiced by Vin Diesel he can easily repeat the trick with a fish that sounds like Rocky.
1. Starro the Conqueror!
A giant cosmic, telepathic, brightly coloured starfish is probably about as comicbooky as you can get and Gunn isn’t even trying to hide it. Other filmmakers would have tried to give a more real world spin on the character that is Starro. They would have made him Cthulhu-esque, changed his colour, but most likely not used him at all. But not Gunn, he is giving the original Justice League villain his day in the sun in all his four colour glory. Fingers crossed that he’s voiced by Taika Waititi.
What did you like in the trailer and what are you most looking forward to in the film?
