DC Universe (DCU), the rebooted shared cinematic universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, launched with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The first entry was Superman (July 2025), written and directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It focused on Clark Kent reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing and earned roughly $616 million worldwide, receiving generally positive reviews for its hopeful tone and character-driven approach. This was followed by Supergirl (June 2026), starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in a story inspired by Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comics; the film underperformed commercially relative to expectations. On October 23, 2026, the mid-budget R-rated body-horror origin story Clayface, centred on actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) and written by Mike Flanagan, arrived in cinemas as an unexpected but well-received addition to the slate.
Looking ahead, the DCU continues building its interconnected world with Man of Tomorrow (July 2027), Gunn’s sequel that pairs Superman with Lex Luthor against a larger threat involving Brainiac. Other projects in various stages of development include The Brave and the Bold (introducing Batman and his son Damian Wayne as Robin), a Swamp Thing film from James Mangold, and potentially Teen Titans. The studio has shown flexibility by greenlighting new entries like Clayface and prioritising a mix of large-scale superhero blockbusters with more experimental, genre-bending films.
