The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) burst into existence with the release of Iron Man in 2008. This film, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, would have been a standard superhero film if not for a post-credits tag introducing Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and the first mention of the Avengers. This last-minute addition kickstarted what would become a global cinematic phenomenon. Following the success of Iron Man, Marvel Studios expanded the MCU with The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, all of which laid the foundation for the interconnected storytelling that would define the franchise.
Everything came together with The Avengers in 2012, which united the heroes from the previous films. The success of this team-up solidified the MCU’s place in popular culture and helped superheroes dominate cinema for the next decade-plus. Over the years, the franchise has grown through multiple phases, introducing new characters and expanding its scope—reaching a massive peak with the one-two punch of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two of the biggest films of all time.
The MCU continued afterward, but after losing some of its biggest stars and navigating a period without a singular clear direction, it lost some momentum with several recent entries. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) roared back to the top of the box office and injected fresh energy. However, Captain America: Brave New World (2025) delivered a more mixed result, while Thunderbolts* earned strong critical and fan praise for its underdog ensemble approach but struggled to draw the broadest audience. Marvel Studios then brought Marvel’s First Family to the screen with The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), a retro-futuristic hit that helped reset the tone. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) continues the momentum heading into the next major crossover era.
