The series set for major creative shake-up if renewed, with new writers and Titans expected.
Apple TV and producer Legendary Television are currently in discussions about a third season of the Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Should the show return, it is likely to look markedly different both in front of and behind the camera. The streamer and studio are exploring a fresh direction for the series, which would involve a new writing team. Matt Fraction and Chris Black created the show, with Black serving as showrunner for the second season, which aired earlier this year.
Season two filled in earlier chapters of the franchise timeline, following events in 2017 alongside flashbacks to the history of the Titan-tracking organisation Monarch. A potential third season is expected to introduce new Titans – the Monsterverse term for the giant creatures that include Godzilla and King Kong.
The future of the current human cast remains less clear. Stars including Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell (who play the same character, Lee Shaw, in different eras) have not been confirmed to return.
Any creative shake-up on the main series would not affect the prequel already greenlit by Apple. That project, starring Wyatt Russell and showrun by Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi), is progressing separately. On the big-screen side of the franchise, the next film, Godzilla vs. Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for release in 2027.
Talks between Apple and Legendary are ongoing, and no formal renewal has yet been announced.
